Award For Ann

Congratulations to our former President and involved member of the club, Ann Bradley, who was award the 'Service to Sport' Award at the Derbyshire 2009 Sports Awards held on Friday the 13th November. Ann puts in a lot of time to ensure that Matlock Baileans is a successful club, most prominently by sorting the Clubmark Award. She also finds time to Umpire matches each Saturday and works within the County on hockey matters.

This award shows recongition of how grateful Matlock Baileans are for her efforts, and Derbyshire as a whole. She may now go through to the East Midlands Awards Ceremony. The full report can be found on the Matlock Mercury website if you Click Here.

Congratulations Ann!

Club Cup Match 11/10/09

Matlock knew this match was going to be tough facing Sutton Coldfield who play in the National League, but were ready to give them a battle anyway. Captain Nic Martin gave a strong pre-match talk and Matlock were raring to go.

Sutton put away 2 early goals as Matlock were shown how a good National League team plays, and needed a little time to settle into the match. However, the goals seemed to awaken the game play in the team, and despite conceding one more goal they put up some fantastic attacking play. Brilliant defensive work, specifically from debutons Alice Cundy and Chloe Knebel, and incredible saves from man-of-the-match keeper Fallon Harrison kept Sutton struggling to find the net again.

At half time, Matlock took a well earned drink and came out with fire in their bellies. Sutton created some good chances and Matlock had to battle hard to keep the scoreline the same, but soon began to play their own game too. Brilliant runs from the forward three; Ash Butterworth, Sarah Archer and Claire Carmichael, gave Matlock some chances, but unfortunately they could not convert them. More defensive battling from the whole team, with further mentions to the defenders Lisa Beacham and Jody Carson, and Katy Honeyman in midfield, whose tackles often saved the day.

Some good luck from the goal post (which was hit twice) meant the scoreline remained the same. Despite tired legs, Matlock battled hard to the final whistle. Nic Martin was a true playmaker in the middle and linked up well with Becky Bowman, who showed aspiring resilience towards the opposition as she ran past the Sutton Coldfield defence several times.

Although the score was 3-0 against Matlock, this was a tremendous team effort on a Sunday match, with all team members having played already that weekend, against an incredibly strong, well-drilled Sutton Coldfield side. The Sutton team remain undefeated in both league and cup matches, having beat Loughborough 1sts last week 5-0. This alone gives Matlock an edge; as the underdogs in this game the team really showed Matlock spirit and heads never once went down despite the strong opposition.

Congratulations to all who played, you showed that Matlock really are a force not to be underestimated!

Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards

Congratulations to the Matlock Baileans U18 team of 08/09 who were given the title of 'Junior Team of the Year' at the recent Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards. The team reached the final of the U18 National Plate in the 08/09 season; showing strong commitment to the game and the drive to play well. Not only does this award credit the players, but also the coaches and the manager who helped the girls through their matches.

Ann Bradley also received the 'Service to Sport' Award, a great credit to all the hard work she has put in to helping the club and hockey in general.

At the Derbyshire Schools Association Awards last month, the Derbyshire U17 team of 08/09, in which 7 of the girls represented Matlock Baileans, were also named 'Team of the Year'.

All the awards are truly deserved and are a good acknowledgement of the hard work put in by everyone over the year, against some strong opposition for the honours. Congratulations!
